On Why I Have Goats
Why do I have goats?
I have them because they help me.
My profession by nature involves a high level of stress. Increase the acuity of patient care and the trauma they've experienced and it multiplies. Moreover, it also involves a high level of interaction with other people, and although I signed up for nursing because I wanted to help people, as a strong introvert constant human interaction drains me.
Something about working with my hands and with animals is soothing. I don't have to talk or explain myself. I can watch the sunrise in solitude (with the exception of the goats, of course) and watch them browse during the day. They've given me a good reason to get up on some days when I'd rather not.
Moreover, I've never been satisfied with the status quo. I'm always fighting the need to improve myself or my surroundings, and working in a small herd that I can improve slowly but satisfactorily has given me an outlet at times when the rest of my life didn't seem to be following suit.
Very few people understand, and I've really never expected them to. I couldn't really explain how these quirky, goofy little creatures have enriched my life, and although sometimes I find myself wondering along with others what I would do with the extra time, I have a hard time imagining my life without this little herd.
I wouldn't be where I am today without Jesus, family, friends, and a lot of prayers, to be sure, but I still owe some thanks to my caprine buddies. ❤️
