Understanding the Linear Appraisal Numbers:To understand better what the numbers mean, I’ve linked some documents including updates for 2022 from the linear appraisal program.
Most traits are not simply “the higher the better.” The numbers just correlate with a range or scale so that the animal can essentially be visualized without being seen, and most importantly so that sire evaluations can be run to determine what traits a buck will likely increase or decrease based on his daughters. These individual traits can change as an animal matures, for better or for worse. Different breeders will generally have different goals or ideals for those ranges based on many factors. The final score, however, correlates with the percentage of the ideal. So an animal with a 90% final score is 90% of the ideal according to the ADGA scorecard. General appearance for milking does is 35 points, dairy strength is 20 points, body capacity is 10 points, and mammary system is 35 points (GA 55, DS 30, BC 15 for bucks), so the percentage of the ideal for each category that the animal is as the appraiser sees them presented that day is how the final score is calculated, with each category weighted according to the scorecard for the final score. First freshening does cannot receive a final score higher than 89. 1. “Blue Book” with photos of ranges (some of these are now outdated): https://adga.org/wp-content/uploads/2019/02/LABOOKLETALL_19.pdf 2.
