We have tested our entire herd roughly annually for CAE since 2015, and in January 2018 we added Johnes to our testing regimen as well. We tested for Johnes periodically since then. We have had goats going out of state tested for TB and brucellosis by our vet for regulatory purposes and they have always been negative.
We have always had negative results. There have also never been any CL abscesses in our herd, past or current, and in 2019 we received all negative results from UBRL for our entire herd after sending blood to be screened for CL. Any abscesses have exudate sent to WADDL for testing and have always been negative for CL.
We also send off milk samples for culture when a doe has a high SCC, is uneven, or has other signs of potential mastitis so that we can determine the organism and collaborate with our vet regarding appropriate treatment. These cultures usually include additional testing for mycoplasma and have always been negative for that organism as well as for other contagious forms of mastitis. Random necropsies have also tested for mycoplasma in the lung tissue.
All screening for CAE, brucellosis, and Johnes has been done by AAVLD accredited labs. Blood collection done in 2015, 2016, and 2018 was performed by our vet and sent by them to one of the GA state labs, also AAVLD accredited.
While we draw blood ourselves now, our veterinarians still see our entire our herd at least annually such as farm calls for CVIs plus individuals for office visits when needed, and we maintain a valid relationship with them.
